Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such drugs must be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become starving," said one woman.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
